Turn a reading into a tiered question set for self-quizzing

Education & Learning self-quizzingreadingcomprehensionactive-learning

Passive reading doesn't build durable knowledge. This prompt converts any text you've just read into a structured set of questions across recall, application, and critical-thinking levels.

Prompt
I just read the following text and want to test my understanding before moving on.

TEXT:
{{READING_TEXT}}

Generate a tiered question set in three levels:

Level 1 — Recall (5 questions)
- Test direct facts, definitions, and named concepts from the text.
- Format: short-answer questions, no multiple choice.

Level 2 — Application (3 questions)
- Each question presents a scenario a working professional in {{MY_ROLE}} might face, and asks me to apply a concept from the text.
- Scenarios should be realistic, not abstract.

Level 3 — Critical thinking (2 questions)
- Ask me to evaluate a claim from the text, identify an assumption the author makes, or argue against one of the text's conclusions.

After listing all questions, add a 'Check your answers' section with model answers for all 10 questions.

Do not generate questions about content that isn't in the text. If the text is too short or too shallow to support Level 3 questions, say so rather than inventing depth that isn't there.
Variables to fill in

  • {{MY_ROLE}}

How to use this prompt

  1. Copy the prompt above (Copy button on the top-right).
  2. Replace each {{VAR}} with your own value. Variables: {{READING_TEXT}}{{MY_ROLE}}.
  3. Paste it into one of the recommended tools below.
  4. Iterate: tighten constraints in the prompt if the output is generic.

Why this prompt is structured this way

The prompt is split into explicit steps because LLMs do better when the path is named, not implied. Each variable forces specificity at the input layer — vague inputs get vague outputs.
